Donate Your Vehicle Program

Help Veterans by Donating a Vehicle to HonorBound

Thousands of former U.S. servicemen and servicewomen struggle every day to put groceries on the table to feed their children or pay basic expenses to keep electricity, water, and heat on in their homes. You can help these veterans by donating a used or broken down vehicle, and receive a tax-deductible receipt in return.

If there’s an old car, truck, van, recreational vehicle, or boat in your driveway that you’re tired of looking at or maintaining, we can take it off your hands, auction it, and use the proceeds to help an American hero who is facing a crisis.

We’re Still Concerned About COVID-19

Many states are loosening restrictions regarding COVID-19 and the health precautions that are necessary, but we will continue to ask our tow truck operators to observe social distancing and keep interactions with donors as safe as possible.

If you have questions, call our donor support line at 844-320-5356.

HonorBound assisted a veteran to get their electricity back on! They were so quick and responsive; I was shocked at their turnaround! Truly amazing; thank you for the work you do for our veterans!

Our Process is Fast and Easy

Here’s How To Contact Us – You start by filling out our online donation form or by calling 844-320-5356. We accept most vehicles. Your vehicle doesn’t need to be running, but it must be in one piece and towable, have an engine, and be tow-truck accessible.

We’ll Tow It Away — Free of Charge – If you fill out our online form, you need to include a day and time when we can come out and tow away your donated vehicle. If you call, one of our representatives will set up a time for us to come out to your home and tow away your vehicle.

There are Tax Benefits When you Donate – In most cases, you will be given a donation receipt from the tow truck driver when your vehicle is picked up. This initial acknowledgement will indicate your name as well as the year, make, model, and condition of the vehicle you are donating. You will then be mailed a thank you letter on behalf of HonorBound Foundation, which serves as a tax receipt, within 30 days of the sale of the vehicle. This will be your final tax document if your vehicle is sold for less than $500.

Vehicle Donation Process and Tax Benefits

What kind of vehicles can I donate?

If it’s a vehicle, you can donate it! You can donate cars, trucks, vans, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, boats, all-terrain vehicles and more.

What paperwork do I need for my donation?

Most of the time all you need is a signed title, but if you have any questions or concerns please contact our donor service department at 844-320-5356.

Do I get a tax deduction for my donation?

Absolutely! If you itemize your tax return, your car donation to HonorBound Foundation, Inc. an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charity, is still tax deductible.

How do you determine the value of my donation?
  • For vehicles sold for $500 or less, you can claim the fair market value up to $500 without any additional paperwork. The preliminary tax receipt with the final sales price of your vehicle will be mailed within 5 days after the vehicle has been picked up.

  • If the gross proceeds from the sale of your donated vehicle exceed $500, your deduction will be limited to the actual sale price. You may deduct the sale price of your donated vehicle or the fair market value up to $500, whichever is greater. To get your deduction you must file an itemized return and provide your Social Security # and IRS form W-9.

You can find more information on charitable vehicle donation tax deductions at http://www.irs.gov/charities.

What percent of the proceeds does the charity receive?

The ultimate sales price of your vehicle depends on many factors including the type and condition of the vehicle as well as the mileage. In addition, there are expenses involved in generating the sales proceeds from your vehicle. These include the costs of towing, auction and administrative fees, and advertising expenses, which affect the proceeds generated from a vehicle donation. Depending on the sale value of vehicles sold at auction, Honor Bound Foundation will receive a minimum of 55 percent of the net proceeds. With fixed costs of towing, auction and administrative fees, higher value vehicles will generate a more favorable return to Honor Bound. Currently, Honor Bound does receive a large amount of scrap vehicles that must be recycled. If a non-running scrap vehicle is donated, minimum fixed costs will ultimately lower the proceeds Honor Bound receives.

My car doesn’t run and is in bad condition. Can I still donate?

Absolutely! We take almost any vehicle from almost any location. To find out if we can accept your vehicle, please call 844-320-5356.

When I donate a vehicle do I get a receipt?

Yes, we will handle all transfer documents, IRS receipts and information. You will be mailed a receipt for tax deduction purposes about 5 days after your vehicle is picked up.
